News: Driver dies in fiery crash on I-64 in James City County

YORK COUNTY, VA – A driver was killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 64 in James City County on Thursday night, WAVY reports.

Virginia State Police responded to the scene on I-64 east near mile marker 244 at about 6:30 p.m. Investigators said the driver of a Nissan Versa lost control of the car while going at a high rate of speed and hit a guardrail. The car went off the road, hit a tree, and then burst into flames.  The driver, whose identity has not yet been released, died at the scene.

A tire that came off the Nissan during the incident struck a Honda CRV that was on nearby Route 143, but the Honda driver was not hurt.

The eastbound lanes of I-64 were not reopened until nearly four hours after the crash.
