News: Woman killed after wrong-way collision in Wise County

WISE COUNTY, VA – One woman died at the hospital after being involved in a head-on collision in Wise County Wednesday evening.

According to WDBJ, the accident occurred along U.S. Route 23 at about 8:10 p.m. Investigators say a Ford Explorer was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 23 when it collided head-on with a Hyundai Santa Fe.

Sharon Dorton, the 62-year-old driver of the Hyundai, was rushed to the hospital immediately following the crash. Unfortunately, Dorton succumbed to her injuries shortly after intake.

The wrong-way driver was airlifted to another hospital where she is being treated for injuries that, while serious, are not expected to be life-threatening at this time.
