News: Safety Service Patrol driver hospitalized after patrol truck hit

SUFFOLK, VA – A Safety Service Patrol driver from the Virginia Department of Transportation was hospitalized after an accident Sunday night.

According to 13 News Now, the SSP driver, Deonte’ R. Mason, had stopped to assist a disabled vehicle in the northbound lanes of traffic on I-664 near the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel at about 8:30 p.m.

As he walked from his Ford F-250 patrol truck to the disabled vehicle, the patrol truck was struck by a Cadillac CTS4 driven by Andre L. Brown, Virginia State Police said.

Mason was pinned between the truck and the jersey wall. He was transported to Riverside Regional Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Brown, of Virginia Beach, was charged with reckless driving and failure to yield.
